So you want to expand your horizons by securing a new talent.
Whatever new ability you might pursue, you’ll want to ensure
your success by seeking to acquire the targeted “skill set”
efficiently. Learning any new skill will force you to adapt to
new conditions, and to master certain details; yet the skills
needed to LEARN it, whichever skill it may be, will not vary. So
to enable you to tackle your new venture with a grin, I have
here briefly outlined and unpacked the rules for properly so
doing.

First, you will need to hit the books, or at least sample a
little e-search, to acquaint yourself with the history of the
subject or activity you purport to subdue. A wise man once noted
that there is nothing new under the sun. “What is,” he pointed
out, “has been before.” So briefly examine the history of
surfing, fishing, full-contact golf, or whatever. This will
plant some great ideas in your head, and give you insights into
how others have done it well. Take notes, and don’t try to
reinvent the surfboard — at least, not yet.

Second, once you have eyeballed what success looked like in this
field in times past, set a specific and measurable goal that
defines for YOU what counts as “success.” Customize it to fit
your life and personality. This step often goes overlooked. Yet
with no clear definition specified for “success” (that
translates easily into numbers), one cannot know when he has won
the day. Imagine a golfer told to whack a hole-in-one, when he
has no idea where the hole sits. You can change your objective
if you overreach yourself at the outset, but you need something
to aim at from the start. So, go on. Be a tiger, and set a goal.

Third, break this goal down into bite-sized tasks you can
perform daily. Remember, one cannot eat all the chocolate at a
See’s candystore in a day, and you’d make yourself ill for the
effort. Oh, sure, it would make for a great deal of fun in the
short run, but you’d hate yourself in the morning. Take it one
bite at a time.

Fourth, learn to traffic fluently in the jargon native to the
community known for dabbling in your chosen art. Every community
of experts speaks its own dialect, a tongue you’ll need to grasp
before you can master the desired skill set. Lawyers, for
instance, must learn to manage a bizarre mix of English and
Latin to move onto their goals. The sooner you come to grasp the
new vocabulary, the faster you will succeed. Immersing yourself
in the community in question, or else just purchasing the
appropriate flash-card set, will make it happen faster.

Fifth, identify the basics most central to obtaining your
targeted ability or trait. Pele, the great Brazilian soccer
player, once remarked to an interviewer that the three most
important ways to master the game were “run with the ball,” “run
with the ball,” and “run with the ball some more.” Each desired
skill set comes with some skills more or less needful than the
others for the obtaining of your goal. You must isolate the ones
most crucial to your aims, and distinguish them from the others.
Make a list, and set them in order, placing the more important
skills at the top in descending order. Then, as they say, “take
it from the top” when deciding how much time each day to spend
on each skill.

Sixth, master the basics — practice RELENTLESSLY the skills at
the top of your list. Larry Byrd — former basketball player for
the Boston Celtics — became quite arguably one of the best NBA
players of all time because he practiced shooting the ball for
hours every day without fail. His record remains all the more
remarkable given that he faced players every game, most of whom
stood much taller than he. If you truly want to win, you must
set apart a certain amount of time each day to make it happen.
Practice is for the Byrds.

Seventh, study those who do it best. Adopt, as it were, three
mentors of your chosen art, and watch how they do it. Then,
analyze the methods each employs, step by step. Compare and
contrast their methods, noting both the common and distinctive
features of each approach. Take notes.

Eighth, use your notes and studies to mix and match the
approaches you have seen. Try a new angle on, or combination of,
their methods. Note not only those that work well, but also the
effects of each attempt on your environment, so that you can
detect HOW and WHY they work well. This will give you new
insights along the way to add to your mastery of the basics.

Ninth, image yourself succeeding in the applying of your new
talent, and under various circumstances. This will better
prepare you for using it in a game, a board meeting, or what
have you. Mentally sort through the problems you’ll likely
encounter in your scenarios. Think of ways to adapt to, and
overcome the imagined obstacles. This will tend to build your
confidence, making you far less likely to run into a situation
wholly new to you. Studies show that mental readiness yields
better performers.

Finally, keep a personal log that recounts your daily efforts to
tackle the small tasks you have allotted to yourself. You might
even do this online on your blog. Also mark any special
conditions attending your task performance for each day. Watch
the progress unfold daily before your eyes. This will motivate
you to press on, and show you how to improve more quickly, by
your noting which conditions aid or hinder your progress.

Pursuing a new goal to improve your own skills takes commitment,
and can offer great rewards. It calls for drive and consistency
more than anything else. Here, the aphorism applies, “It is
better not to vow, than to vow and not fulfill.” Half-hearted
efforts lead to discouragement, end in failure, and lower your
own confidence to meet other tasks as well in the future.

So take a realistic inventory before deciding to embark on a new
venture. Gather up some information to assess whether or not it
really has the value you think it does. Count the cost first.
After you’ve decided to jump in with both feet, pursue it to
completion, step by step. Follow the rules, and press on. A new
you — your future upgrade — awaits.

Fire, fire, Natasha heard people shouting, she ran out of her house and saw that there was fire everywhere. There seemed to be so much of light all around her that she could not see anything. There is nothing like certainty in life things can change any time, any minute. Her mind was spinning; she suddenly remembered that her baby was sleeping inside the house. She ran back into the house. She looked at the clock hanging on the wall. It was 11 pm. She had seen this before, surely she had. The same clock the same time; she had heard the same noises.

Something was very familiar about this scene. It seemed like she had lived this before. Nancy tried to put away her thoughts. She ran indeed the house calling out “Romi, get up there is a fire”. She picked up Romi from the bed. Suddenly she threw him out of the window and jumped. She new it for sure that there not much time to go downstairs and walk out of the door, the house would come down. There was someone outside ready to catch Romi. How did she know that someone would be there to catch her baby? She was on the ground and Romi was safe in a strangers arm. The house was falling into pieces. It seemed like all this had happened before and she had seen it. Maybe it was her dream turning into reality, dreams that were haunting her. Fear smiled on her face.

Any one who plays games on there computer or even on a consol like a play station two, x- box, game cube, can tell you that the games today have a lot of technology put into them. It’s that technology that going to create more and more business for the computer world.

More and more people are playing games today. Games are one of the top most favorite pass times for people all over the world. The interest in gaming has grown a lot in the past few years, and it’s that interest that is making the gaming industry a top contender in the Technology world.

As more people get caught up in the gaming world. The demand for better games have become a must have. The better the game is the more people want to play it, and if more people want to play it. The better the sales are.

So you can figure just as much as the gaming technology has increased in the world today. The demand for better technology to run the games is on the rise also. This is giving both the gaming world as well as the computer world a great big foot in the supply and demand market.

It’s really hard to tell which one. The gaming world or the computer world has more of the control in this market. What I do know is that both of them are not going to be going any where soon. As long as there are gamers there will always be a demand for better games. If there is always going to be a demand for better games there will always be a demand for better technology to run the games

Robert Emler: Avid computer gamer. I like being in the game. I also like to have the rite equipment to play the game. For fun family games an a lot of other games go to.

Identity theft is a growing concern among Americans, and rates among the top five complaints received by states’ Attorney General’s offices. A stolen identity can lead to tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt in the victim’s name and it can take years to completely undo the damage done to the victim’s credit report. Identity thieves can successfully commit crime with as little as a driver’s license number or credit card number, but the ideal target of such criminals is the Social Security number. With that number in hand, the identity thief can pass themselves off as the victim and open credit card accounts, bank accounts, and even obtain home equity loans. As more Americans become aware of the problems posed by identity theft, consumers are doing more to protect themselves. This has inspired thieves to look to a new source of identities to steal, and they have found one. They are now stealing the identities of children.

Established in the 1930’s the Social Security Administration was set up to provide benefits for retired Americans. Taxes are withdrawn from the paychecks of eligible workers, and each worker is issued a Social Security number in order to keep track of his or her benefits. Over the years, and despite the intentions of those who created the system, the Social Security number has become a de facto national identity number. It is difficult, if not impossible, to engage in most financial transactions without providing that number to the other party in the transaction. In fact, the number itself has become as important as the name of the person who holds it. Over the years, criminals have discovered that by obtaining the Social Security number of someone else, all kinds of illegal activities are possible, including obtaining loans in the names of the owner’s of the stolen numbers.

With more people now aware of the potential of identity theft, consumers are more carefully protecting their personal information. As a result, thieves are now targeting the Social Security numbers of children. A law passed in 1989 requires parents of newborn infants to register for a Social Security number for their child. That child will probably not need that number until he or she is a teenager, when the number might be necessary to obtain a driver’s license, open a bank account, or get a job. In the meantime, the number is not only unused, but the theft of it may go unnoticed. Thieves who obtain a Social Security number of a child know that they can probably use it for a decade without being caught.
How can you protect your child from identity theft? Treat your child’s personal information as if it were your own, and guard it carefully. Don’t give out the Social Security number of your child unless it is absolutely necessary, and if you aren’t sure if it’s necessary, ask. Some doctors and hospitals, for instance, request the number as a matter of course, but they may not actually need it.

Check to see if your child has a credit report. You can obtain one for free at the free credit report Website. Your child, if not working, shouldn’t have a credit report, so if the credit bureaus have one on file, you may have a problem. A child’s personal information is as useful to an identity thief as that of an adult. Guard yours and your children’s identification carefully.

I have been collecting random things from a very early age. I would spend days searching for a specific collectables (for example I collected mcdonalds toys which later became very collectable mcdonalds toys.) but then as I grew up I needed to find a new hobby so I got into collecting cars, well as a younger teen just thinking and dreaming about collecting cars - but now as I get older, wiser and richer I look to truly expand my car collection - do you think thats sensible? I started out by buying one rare ferrari that I saw for sale at a rare ferrari sale. From there its just catapulted and I have purchased about 10 cars since ranging from not so collectable but random citroen that I found at a similar used citroen sale to the true extent of my addiction to all things italian with purchasing a alfa romeo gtv for just under £3k - pretty good again for its year and mileage etc. But god its bad on the bank balance - £100k on cars alone in the last 6 months - and I only have a 10 garage so I need to either spend another 40k on a new garage or chill out with the car purchasing!!

“Like the tan? I got tons of sun on that Caribbean cruise. First class tickets to Florida and back! Nope, not an airline upgrade. 5-star service all the way, baby! Hotels, restaurants, theme parks…you name it! Look…I took pics with my new cell phone! Hey, let me know when you’re free to take a spin in the car - it’s a 2005 sports model, fully loaded! Yours truly, Chad E. Charlatan, is going to the top! Nope, no job. But I didn’t pay for anything myself. I don’t care who Ms. Donna Knowe-Bedter is, but it’s not my fault if she doesn’t keep tabs on her credit card statements. One day I’ll thank her for being so rich!”

In a perfect world, everyone is honest, with good intentions.

We don’t live in a perfect world.

ID thieves are supreme opportunists. Read the news? Hackers can break into corporate computer systems and steal information on clients and customers. “Skimmers” can be attached to credit card readers, and used to store credit- and bank-card numbers. Identity thieves may pose as employers, landlords or even utility company representatives to get at your personal and financial info. Other thieves may use their employers’ authorized access to obtain credit reports or other information. Databases and other records can be stolen from employers; thieves may bribe fellow employees who may have access to important data. They may steal your mail and take credit card offers, tax information and other documents. “Dumpster diving” involves digging through garbage to find information such as bank statements, or credit card information. And there’s always the age-old method of simply stealing your wallet or purse.

New ways of stealing your identity pop up frequently. “Phishing” became prominent in 2003 and 2004: well-designed emails and websites convince victims to provide information. Emails look legit, but release any information and the nightmare begins. The cost? Damages now top $1 billion per year. How’s that for a nightmare?

Thieves get new phone services, auto loans and credit cards using stolen information. Victims may find their mailing addresses changed, and their credit ruined. ID thieves can file for bankruptcy in the victims’ name to escape debt, and drain accounts by counterfeiting checks and debit cards. They can also open bank and credit card accounts using their victims’ names.

Your name may be given to the police during an arrest. If the real thief is released, and fails to arrive for a court date, you may be arrested. And out-of-pocket costs to clean up the mess can be staggering.

Be savvy, capiche? Thoughtful planning can prevent the pain of a stolen ID.

* Buy a shredder. Shred documents with your name, personal information such as social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses, birthdates, credit applications, financial documents, and medical and insurance information. Whole documents can be used against you. Confetti can’t.

* Get your credit report. Verify it. Manage this tool carefully, and use it for protection. It’s worth it.

* Secure your computer against online theft. Your PC is a gateway to private information. NEVER leave an online connection open if you are away from your computer. Use a firewall.

* Change passwords often. Use passwords with numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember, but hard for someone to figure out.

* Some programs allow the PC to fill out forms automatically. Convenient, but your PC may be hacked for info. Disable this feature.

* Call your credit card companies and make sure there are no surprises on any of your credit cards, then request that restrictions be placed on each card. Example: you can request for no phone charges, or limits on single purchases. Violating these restrictions stops the transaction. Nightmare avoided.

* Mailbox secure? Stealing mail is one of the easiest ways to steal your ID. Get a lockable USPS-approved mailbox.

* Be extremely picky about giving out your Social Security Number. Resist giving out that very personal piece of information. Check the privacy act of 1974. Homework: go to http://www.faqs.org/faqs/privacy/ssn-faq/ on the web for more information.

* Other information, like your mother’s maiden name, seems harmless; those items are often used as verification of ID. Don’t give it out. Keep yourself to yourself, and stay educated.

Having your ID stolen is a terrible experience, and consumes much time, finance and energy. For your own sake, the sake of your sanity and your safety, set aside a few minutes to follow the advice above. Protect yourself the next time someone says, “…and your name is….?”

In the past couple of years the internet has opened up a new
world of marketing opportunities for both the independent
musician and major record labels and their sponsors. Most of the
major music festivals and organized band events are sponsored by
large corporations who set out to put their brand across to
young music fans. Many of them still seem to be missing the link
for getting these events shown to a much larger audience by
using the services provided by WebVideo4U. There is also the
scope for creating more online live and archived events and
performances. The current way of online broadcasting of events
is for a company to pay for the venues and ticketing, recording
and web casting on their own website. This requires a bit too
much involvement for most companies who would otherwise love
their brands to be seen by a targeted audience.

Those who work in the healthcare industry have irregular work
schedule; they often work at nights and they also have long
shifts(12 hours or longer). Consequently, traditional classroom
style education is not the best option to them, if they want to
farther their education. However, they have a very viable option
now, online education; online education allows them to study
wherever they want and whenever they want, which is a great fit
to nurses and doctors.

The current obstacle for the non-broadcasted events is that most
bands and musicians do not have the required funds or
promotional know how to finance these services. It will be up to
companies who are willing to sponsor live shows to invite
independent bands to perform. The bands would let there fans
know when the event is being broadcast. The advertising content
can be included on the set of the gigs making it easy to utilize
the bands website as a place for the fans to view the broadcast
with minimal coding and web design work. If a company sets up
the sponsorship right, they could invite many different bands
from all over the world to supply pre-recorded live shows that
can be rebroadcast online. Their products and branding would be
seen on many different websites by a focused audience without
much financial outlay. For this to happen though, requires a
third party to connect the bands with the companies. Most bands
would jump at the chance of having their music broadcast over
the internet even if the opening splash screen was sponsored by
a brand of beer they didn’t drink.

It’s common for bands to have a strong following in their local
community or their country of origin which adds even more power
to a successful focused advertising campaign. By providing the
link between the sponsors and the bands, webvideo4u opens up a
whole new area of online marketing and band promotion. The band
can keep their fans happy, and hopefully sell some CDs along the
way.

Gourmets World24 Jan 2008 02:01 pm

We may define a food to be any substance which will repair the functional waste of the body, increase its growth, or maintain the heat, muscular, and nervous energy. In its most comprehensive sense, the oxygen of the air is a food; as although it is admitted by the lungs, it passes into the blood, and there re-acts upon the other food which has passed through the stomach. It is usual, however, to restrict the term food to such nutriment as enters the body by the intestinal canal. Water is often spoken of as being distinct from food, but for this there is no sufficient reason.

Many popular writers have divided foods into flesh-formers, heat-givers, and bone-formers. Although attractive from its simplicity, this classification will not bear criticism.

Flesh-formers are also heat-givers. Only a portion of the mineral matter goes to form bone.

Water forms an essential part of all the tissues of the body. It is the solvent and carrier of other substances.

Mineral Matter or Salts, is left as an ash when food is thoroughly burnt. The most important salts are calcium phosphate, carbonate and fluoride, sodium chloride, potassium phosphate and chloride, and compounds of magnesium, iron and silicon.

Mineral matter is quite as necessary for plant as for animal life, and is therefore present in all food, except in the case of some highly-prepared ones, such as sugar, starch and oil. Children require a good proportion of calcium phosphate for the growth of their bones, whilst adults require less. The outer part of the grain of cereals is the richest in mineral constituents, white flour and rice are deficient. Wheatmeal and oatmeal are especially recommended for the quantity of phosphates and other salts contained in them. Mineral matter is necessary not only for the bones but for every tissue of the body.

Organic Compounds are formed by living organisms (a few can also be produced by chemical means). They are entirely decomposed by combustion.

The Non-Nitrogenous Organic Compounds are commonly called carbon compounds or heat-producers, but these terms are also descriptive of the nitrogenous compounds. These contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only, and furnish by their oxidation or combustion in the body the necessary heat, muscular and nervous energy. The final product of their combustion is water and carbon dioxide (carbonic acid gas).

The Carbohydrates comprise starch, sugar, gum, mucilage, pectose, glycogen, &c.; cellulose and woody fibre are carbohydrates, but are little capable of digestion. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the proportion to form water, the carbon alone being available to produce heat by combustion. Starch is the most widely distributed food. It is insoluble in water, but when cooked is readily digested and absorbed by the body. Starch is readily converted into sugar, whether in plants or animals, during digestion. There are many kinds of sugar, such as grape, cane and milk sugars.

The Oils and Fats consist of the same elements as the carbohydrates, but the hydrogen is in larger quantity than is necessary to form water, and this surplus is available for the production of energy. During their combustion in the body they produce nearly two-and-a-quarter times (4 : 8.9 = 2.225) as much heat as the carbohydrates; but if eaten in more than small quantities, they are not easily digested, a portion passing away by the intestines. The fat in the body is not solely dependent upon the quantity consumed as food, as an animal may become quite fat on food containing none. A moderate quantity favours digestion and the bodily health. In cold weather more should be taken. In the Arctic regions the Esquimaux consume enormous quantities. Nuts are generally rich in oil. Oatmeal contains more than any of the other cereals (27 analyses gave from 8 to 12.3 per cent.)

Vegetable Acids are composed of the same three elements and undergo combustion into the same compounds as the carbohydrates. They rouse the appetite, stimulate digestion, and finally form carbonates in combination with the alkalies, thus increasing the alkalinity of the blood. The chief vegetable acids are: malic acid, in the apple, pear, cherry, &c.; citric acid, in the lemon, lime, orange, gooseberry, cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, &c.; tartaric acid, in the grape, pineapple, &c.

Proteids or Albuminoids are frequently termed flesh-formers. They are composed of nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and a small quantity of sulphur, and are extremely complex bodies. Their chief function is to form flesh in the body; but without previously forming it, they may be transformed into fat or merely give rise to heat. They form the essential part of every living cell.

Proteids are excreted from the body as water, carbon dioxide, urea, uric acid, sulphates, &c.

The principal proteids of animal origin have their corresponding proteids in the vegetable kingdom. Some kinds, whether of animal or vegetable origin, are more easily digested than others. They have the same physiological value from whichever kingdom they are derived.
The Osseids comprise ossein, gelatin, cartilage, &c., from bone, skin, and connective issue. They approach the proteids in composition, but unlike them they cannot form flesh or fulfil the same purpose in nutrition. Some food chemists wish to call the osseids, albuminoids; what were formerly termed albuminoids to be always spoken of as proteids only.

Jellies are of little use as food; not only is this because of the low nutritive value of gelatin, but also on account of the small quantity which is mixed with a large proportion of water.

The Vegetable Kingdom is the prime source of all organic food; water, and to a slight extent salts, form the only food that animals can derive directly from the inorganic kingdom. When man consumes animal food?a sheep for example?he is only consuming a portion of the food which that sheep obtained from grass, clover, turnips, &c. All the proteids of the flesh once existed as proteids in the vegetables; some in exactly the same chemical form.

Flesh contains no starch or sugar, but a small quantity of glycogen. The fat in an animal is derived from the carbohydrates, the fats and the proteids of the vegetables consumed. The soil that produced the herbage, grain and roots consumed by cattle, in most cases could have produced food capable of direct utilisation by man. By passing the product of the soil through animals there is an enormous economic loss, as the greater part of that food is dissipated in maintaining the life and growth; little remains as flesh when the animal is delivered into the hands of the butcher. Some imagine that flesh food is more easily converted into flesh and blood in our bodies and is consequently more valuable than similar constituents in vegetables, but such is not the case. Fat, whether from flesh or from vegetables is digested in the same manner. The proteids of flesh, like those of vegetables, are converted into peptone by the digestive juices?taking the form of a perfectly diffusible liquid?otherwise they could not be absorbed and utilised by the body. Thus the products of digestion of both animal and vegetable proteids and fats are the same. Formerly, proteid matter was looked upon as the most valuable part of the food, and a large proportion was thought necessary for hard work. It was thought to be required, not only for the construction of the muscle substance, but to be utilised in proportion to muscular exertion.

These views are now known to be wrong. A comparatively small quantity of proteid matter, such as is easily obtained from vegetable food, is ample for the general needs of the body. Increased muscular exertion requires but a slight increase of this food constituent. It is the carbohydrates, or carbohydrates and fats that should be eaten in larger quantity, as these are the main source of muscular energy. The fact that animals, capable of the most prolonged and powerful exertion, thrive on vegetables of comparatively low proteid value, and that millions of the strongest races have subsisted on what most Englishmen would consider a meagre vegetarian diet, should have been sufficient evidence against the earlier view.

Indigestible Matter?

Food is never entirely digested. As a reason against confining ourselves solely to vegetable food, it has been stated that such is less perfectly digested than animal food and that it therefore throws more work on the digestive organs. It is also urged that on this account a greater quantity of vegetable food is required. We have shown elsewhere that, on the contrary, vegetarians are satisfied with a smaller amount of food. Man requires a small quantity of woody fibre or cellulose in his food to stimulate intestinal action and prevent constipation.

School of Psychology23 Jan 2008 10:31 pm

Dear Jane,

I have felt very unhappy for months. There are times when my spirits lift but only briefly. I tend to worry a lot and feel stressed and cannot see any joy in life. I am 30 years old, a female and a lecturer.

I have a lot on my plate work-wise. Yet I have few fixed working hours and some of my work can be done at home or at the library. I am involved in several tasks as well as having written a thesis and waiting for feedback.

I had a bad experience when I left my previous job eight months ago as I couldn’t give them notice. Physically I feel run down and long for free time; yet when I give myself time off I feel bored and unhappy.

I had a bout of pneumonia two years ago and tend to think about the possibility of a recurrence. I’m also worrying about doing too much work and missing out on life — but then I worry about not doing enough!

I am not married and have no-one in my life. I have creative tendencies but they are not made use of in my work at the moment.

M.

Dear M,
Your letter gives a clear insight into the origins of depression. It’s all there!

Trauma. That bout of pneumonia. That bad experience when you left your last job.

Stress and suspense. Waiting for feedback on your thesis. A lot of work, unstructured so you can never feel quite sure that you’ve finished for the day.

Lack of flow. You are not using your creative tendencies. Your work is not bringing you joyful challenge and achievement. Your talents and skills are not being satisfyingly expressed

Lack of people in your life. We all need friends and intimacy, the feeling of being loved and needed.

Worry, worry and worry.

On top of this you may be physically in poor shape. Not enough good quality food, fresh air and exercise.

Every improvement you make, however small, in any of these areas towards the direction of life and fulfilment will make you feel better. A priority is to reduce the amount of time worrying. Pointless worry is corrosive.

(When your brain goes over and over a problem that it can’t sort out, the issue is recycled again in your dreams. The purpose of dreams is to resolve problems but these worries are not the sort of thing which are easily resolved. So you will be dreaming too much, and when you dream too much you wake up in the morning feeling as if you have left your headlights on all night.

Dreaming is the most tiring thing your brain can do. Up to a couple of hours is normal - indeed essential. But when you’re depressed you may dream for up to six hours - which is devastating. You wake with no energy to feel pleasure, interest, curiosity, excitement, motivation and get up and go.)

Worry also causes chronic low-grade stress. So not only is your sleep not refreshing, but many of your body systems are affected by stress hormones. No wonder you worry in case you’re at risk of another bout of pneumonia - because you will not feel completely healthy and you will have some strange physical sensations and aches and pains.

Your mental functioning is also affected by worry, stress, and over-dreaming. You will find that your ability to plan and make decisions, concentrate and remember things are all below par. Your mind does not seem to be working clearly. Instead of seeing things in perspective, you will find you have a tendency to see them in black or white - ‘Everything is awful.’ ‘I am a complete failure.’ ‘Nothing will ever get better.’ ‘It is all my fault.’ Such illogical, over-the-top thoughts result from depression, and of course because they make everything seem so hopeless, they make you even more depressed.

The worry half hour

The way forward is by keeping your worry under control. Set aside a ‘worry half hour’. Whenever worries come into your mind, you acknowledge them and say to yourself ‘I’ll think about this at 6 o’clock’ or whenever. This works better than trying to dismiss or fight against the worries. Work out what you’re afraid of and what is the worst that could happen and what you could do about it. Imagine you’re advising a friend, and treat yourself with the same realism and calm common sense you would use to help someone else.

Dealing with trauma

Depression always imroves when traumas are lifted. I use the powerful Fast Trauma Cure developed by the Human Givens counselling approach. In just one session, people can feel so much lighter and clearer. Otherwise look for an EMDR (NLP) practitioner. EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, may also help … and has the advantage that you can do it for yourself.

Trauma and worry are two components of depression. Having unmet needs is the third. There are gaping holes in your life which need filling. People. And an outlet for your creativity. Start with finding interest groups, people you could have a cup of coffee with. Start by using your creativity on your environment, so that it’s pleasant and expresses your personality. Such things are not trivial. They are the building blocks of a good life.

Lastly exercise improves people’s mental outlook - even a brisk walk is a lot better than sitting on the couch worrying. And be sure to get good quality fresh food, and take two Omega 3 fatty acid capsules daily with a multi-mineral pill to insure basic physical health to support a better frame of mind.

Good luck.
